Obama Jobs Bill on Its Way to Defeat?(1) {EAV_BLOG_VER:9a8b9c0c1b5f6f58} Not surprisingly, President Obama‘s jobs bill is poised to be defeated later today. What’s worse is that Democrats don’t appear to be unified in support for the bill, which is hugely (and awesomely, I might add) embarrassing for the White House. Democrats in the Senate have already revised Obama’s original plan, which had a tax increase on families making $250,000/year and up to a tax increase on families making $1 million/year – no doubt a symbolic homage to the Occupy Wall Street folks. What Republicans really need is for Democrats to break ranks on Obama’s Jobs Bill. Many are under the hot seat in very conservative states, like Ben Nelson (D – Nebraska), Joe Manchin (D – West Virginia), and Jon Tester (D – Montana). The irony, of course, is that these guys will likely lose reelection whether or not they break ranks with other Democrats. In any case, if they and other Blue Dogs vote against the bill, it will be easy for the GOP to portray this as something that wasn’t popular on either side of the aisle, especially if the Senate fails to get over fifty votes. Other likely no-votes include Joe Lieberman (I – Connecticut), Max Baucus (D – Montana), Olympia Snowe (R – Maine), Scott Brown (R – Massachusetts), and Susan Collins (R – Maine). Still, Democrats have deluded themselves into thinking this will be a GOP loss should the bill not pass. A spokesman for Harry Reid had this to say:
The same way the stimulus kept unemployment below 8% like your president promised? I doubt it. |
